Considering the Age vs Condition...I think I could live with a bike that "looked it's age"
Anyone can Buy New and Shiney...
Not that FXR tho...
FWIW
I took a Deer out W/my FXR, Put a nasty dent in the tank, and front fender.
I replaced the Sheet metal with some already molested stuff...
Quite a Few Years later, I found a Body man who could Pull that dent without molesting the Factory Paint. He also kinda got the Fender in shape without knocking any [more] paint off...I'm In Heaven...
Beaut bike....polish up the original as best you can, but leave the patina....I recently imported an unmolested 1984 FXSB Shovelhead in mint condition apart from a small dent in one of the gas tanks....I'm resisting the urge to get it fixed...got most of it out by heating with a hairdryer then putting an ice cube on it.
Thanks everyone, sorry I didnt make myself clear. The OG blue paint on the bike is faded so I wanted to have the blue repainted keeping it original.
Take it by a good detail shop first, one that can buff or wet sand, and see if the original can be brought back. If it were mine, and I couldn't bring the original finish back up, I'd leave it alone, but with enough money it's possible to do anything paint-wise.
Or you could save yourself the trouble and I'll take it off your hands.....
I, too own an 86 FXRD.. You've joined a pretty exclusive club. Only 1000 were made and there are probably just a fraction of them left on the road in stock condition. A couple of things I've learned over the 4 years I've owned mine:
The tank decals are long obsolete and I've never been able to track a set down.
Your best bet is to find a very good paint shop that can touch up any chips in the paint and then re-shoot a new layer of clear coat on the bike. Mine is two tone blue and the local PPG shop did a computer color match to mine. It matched to BMW Carbon Black.
I see you have an aftermarket exhaust. The Factory head pipe was a one off part that was just used on the FXRD. I doubt there is one to be found anywhere. I had mine coated in Jet-hot to try to extend it's lifespan.
There are aftermarket lower fairings out there, but i cannot comment on the fit.
I had to replace the factory cassette deck on mine as it **** the bed last year. I had to do a little cutting to fit a DIN stereo in it's lace, but it had to be done
If I can answer any questions about the bike, please PM me. I love talking about my "D"
Congratulations nice ride! Check with Harley Davidson see if the paint that you want is still available. I'm sure there's something out there that will be a pretty close to match it. As others have said borderline collectible
