Not sure how long they have been out, I bought mine two years ago thru J&P CYCLE.

Did the starter crank the engine?

Did anything else electrical lose power?

Knowing exactly what lost power will determine which direction to take in troubleshooting.

Do yourself a favor, you have a 27 year old motorcycle: Get a factory service manual, don`t guess where wires go...

89 should have electronic ignition with a hall effect pickup in the nose cone. The factory setting for dead rev's on electronic ignition is 3 so it's possible that you didn't crank it long enough for the ignition module to send the 12 volt supply to the coil. Also these hall effect pickups can get hot and not send any signal at all till they cool. So it sounds like it in the pickup to me...
