I'm curious if you ever rechecked the compression with the engine warm and throttle open. I have read that the throttle open does not make much of a difference...again just curious. YD

Yes I did and yes it does make a huge difference! With the throttle open, I have 148 and 150 compression.

I consider that a "good" reading.

Much better. Now you know you don't have a bent valve.

Yes! Its a relief knowing that the engine is healthy. Ive almost convinced myself that these evo motors are suppose to sound, in the words of the wise TexasHillCountry, like an angry sewing machine

A hot evo tends to be a bit noisy, but rather quiet compared to a shovelhead or an Ironhead Sportster (which to me sounds like a Maytag washer when hot).
When I hear the normal noises from a evo, I pray the Serenity Prayer & leave it be...:-)

Over the years I've owned my bike, I've had three engines in it. All three had their own set of sounds. The current engine sounds like it's about to fall apart any second. It's sounded like that for 109,000 miles now, so I guess it's "normal" for this engine. The second motor was the quietest motor I had. It also started hard, ran hot, and threw a rod bearing at 6,000 miles (hence the "third" motor). At 109,000 miles I'm still reading 145 psi in each cylinder, so I guess there's some life left in it.

What I've learned from this is, a noisy Evo motor is a happy Evo motor.

So stop worrying and go for a ride.

I've said this before, but earplugs are your friend.

All the ticking, clicking, clacking, rattling and banging coming out of the motor tends to be at the higher frequencies of the hearing spectrum...exactly the frequencies that the ear plugs cut. All you are left with is the delicious and sublime exhaust note.

Once in a while, I forget to put mine in. The engine on my EG (particularly given how the fairing directs the noise back toward me) is pounding away like the Hammers of Hell. Put the plugs back in, and the order of the universe is restored.

This whole thing started after I changed to quieter mufflers. Big mistake I pulled the wrap off of the baffles (again) off yesterday for more volume and life is good. Also found a broken hose clamp on the left heat shield just ahead of the muffler that was rattling like crazy.
