When I google specs for 1992 FLSTC, it says 3.4 gals. Could that be 3.4 primary and 0.8 reserve equals 4.2 total? Or might the older FLSTCs have smaller tanks?
If 3.4 is primary, then I wonder if when I hit reserve and filled with 2.4 either; 1) I did not hit reserve and stalled for another reason, 2) I put in 3.4 and thought I put in 2.4, 3) There is something wrong with my tank.....
I think I will figure out a way to carry an extra gallon with me so that I can test my limits.

One way you can check your reserve is get 2 gas cans.
Run a fuel line from your petcock to the gas cans (one at a time)
Drain your tanks in the run position into one gas can and then move the hose to the other can and turn switch to the reserve position.
That will tell you how much reserve you have.

I've had to remove my tanks a few times recently and this is how i've done it every time. Every time I got about half a gallon when I switched to reserve, I have a Pingel valve.
Just filled up using the correct method. Left side first then right side. I put in 2.3 gallons after having gone 31 miles since last fill up using old method. If I estimate mileage at 40 mpg then it should have taken about 0.8 gals. Therefore, I must have put about 1.5 gals extra in by using the correct method. And since I put in 2.4 when it went to empty using the incorrect method, I am estimating that primary is 3.5 to 3.9, which makes sense.
Going to run it to reserve again and see how much it takes. That will probably be close enough for my purposes. I might try the precise method recommended above some time. But for now, I am going to try the run it to reserve method and see how much I put in.
