Default Questions about a free evo bagger

New to the forum, so hello, i was lucky enough to recently have someone give me a 87 flh. it will be a project bike but my questions a cosmetic for now, i want to switch out the fairings for later model as well as the gas tank immediately, don't like the leather dash pad, question is, does anyone know what model year tank and fairing would be the closest match? thanks for any input.

I can't help with what fits what but I sure would like to see a picture of your free bike and congratulate you on your score.

Welcome.
An '89 and up tank is probably the look you are after. I don't understand the faring issue, it's essentially the same through 2014. Or, did you get an FLHS? That bike came with a windshield only, like a current Road King, you could retrofit an FLHT faring (hollow back) from a 1985 or earlier bike. Perhaps that's what you have?

Congratulations on your free bike, that sounds almost too good to be true! As for changing stuff, take a few moments out. We are getting new members who want to make an old bike look like a new one, which is not as simple as it may seem. Nothing is impossible, but these bikes have changed over the years, rather more than is obvious. Don't assume that 'upgrading' your bike is easy peasy.

It should be straightforward to swap tanks, but how about simply changing the part you don't like, such as removing the leather stuff and painting it, or applying a different finish? Make it look custom. The fairing is another matter, as later ones use different instruments and your bike has a cable-operated speedo, not the later electronic one. You will need to marry your old wiring system to a later one. More recent bikes use Canbus, which isn't compatible with your bike.

Look forward to seeing photos and more details of your bike. We can be more helpful when we know exactly what you have.

Man nice score. Get it running for now and ride it this summer, then worry about what to change out over next winter. Plus while you are riding it you can be picking up parts here and there for the big tear down and upgrade.
Good luck and post some pics.

Thanks for the input so far, i will get pics up later today, I'm not trying to make it look new, i have a couple of those already, i just don't like the instrument panel in the inner fairing. i have a tank i am going to swap out. And as far as riding it i have other options so my winter build may start tonight since it feels like November instead of may here in northern virginia!

When they talk about "making it your own", that's what they mean.
