Your charging system is probably fine. You have a short. Where is the problem. Oh, and you have a Chiltons or Haynes or something manual, not a HD Factory manual, from the description. When we say "manual," we mean a Factory HD Shop Manual.

Look at the turn signals and brake/tail light circuits. Follow the wires. There could be a bare wire poking through the fender, shorting out. The factory didn't put grommets in the fenders, for example. Go over all the wires and look for anything where the insulation doesn't look perfect. Take the headlight out and see if it still cycles the breaker. Lots of wires in there on some bikes and something could go wrong there.

And there comes a time when subbing it out to a pro is a good idea. The guys in Lethbridge used to be pretty good when I was last there in '87. Surely there's someone around that can help. My cousin could probably figger it out. Not too much different than a John Deere. Just don't have his contact info anymore, but he was in the Red Deer area.

The two relays that you say are clicking are actually doing their job. You need to get the proper wiring schematic for your ride and trace both circuits from the circuit breaker on. Its not as confusing as one might think. You can trace it to the short, you'll see..

I figured those relays were telling. E a story. I think I found it, I have no brake light so I'm gonna assume that's the short lies there. Thanks a bunch for the help, much appreciated

I have the factory service manual, I wish it was a clymer they have a bunch of tips & tricks that are extremely helpful. I find the FSM hit or miss, sometimes it's very useful and sometimes not at all. When I pulled my back tire off I forgot to take pics how all the washers & spacers went and there was ***** all in the manual about it. Spent absurd time on the interwebs looking for an exploited view of a "1999 FXSTC exploited rear axle" maybe I just don't know where to look. I would gladly take it to my Indy but I'm one of the many Alberta oilfield workers that went from 200K a year to zero, that's a big adjustment when your used to living like a rockstar (single & no kids) I found my brake light is not working so it stands to reason that's my short. Will dive into it tomorrow fingers crossed. Can't thank you enough doc, you have been a HUGE help & iit was GREATLY appreciated, thanks so much

The pulled relay was the one clicking when I turned the ignition on but now the one to the right of it clicks and my spedo and dash lights flicker on and off intermittently when I fire it up. Any ideas? I'm guessing a short within one or both of those circuits? Don't be afraid to dumb it down to a 4'th grade level for me, when it comes to electrical I am lost. Thanks a bunch for your help, it is VERY much appreciated
BTW, if your referring to the small silver square canisters as relays, they are actually circuit breakers, not relays...

Check out the brake/tail light socket, get a new bulb in there, look for a grungy socket, then follow every inch of the wires back to the breaker panel. Do the same for the turn signals as Dr. Hess suggested. YD
