I'd bet your right
The TC I just bought has crank runout of .012 + according to the tech that ck'd the motor out after it cratered. Oil pump trash and end of crank junk.

12,229 mi on a 08 UC Couldn't pass this one up

I feel that it is best to follow any directions that are provided by the mfg of the gaskets even if the procedure is different from what is outlined in the factory manual.
