Just bought a '90 Electra Glide Ultra Classic that has turn signal issues. I'm trying to help out my mechanic friend who is working on it. The directionals don't work properly. They will light up but not blink or not light up at all. The strange thing is that the former owner says they work if the battery is fully charged and going down the road. And that there is a draw on the battery when it is sitting and it will kill the battery. I have not witnessed any of this, but other than standard troubleshooting of bad grounds, pinched wires, etc, has anyone run into this? As I said, I'm just trying to give my mechanic a hand if possible.
I have an '88 sporty and just got a '92 Dyna Glide custom. In both cases I've had to go through and redo the wiring from previous mods or fixes. From what the OP says it sounds like some where the wiring has been changed and is not going through the flasher and pwr is coming directly from the battery. I think what I would do is sit down the a schematic and trace down each with and see if any mod's have been done.
Replace the flasher module (located inside the faring, on the right fork) with a modern electronic one, available at any auto parts store. Look for one that is 2 wires and "LED Compatible."
Not sure what kind of "flasher module" a 1990 has, last year before self canceling signals. But what ever it has to "flash" should be looked at.
Actually first year of the self-cancelling module! However those modules were expensive when they were still available, so it will be no surprise if a cheapskate PO has bodged something else in its place. On my 1990, owned from new, the module was clipped to the r/h fork leg, between the trees.
Now that I've ridden it a few times. It seems that they work some of the time. Some times it takes holding the button down to get them to work and sometimes you just have to hold the button down a second time. Either way, it's not a 'hit the button' and they're on, it's a 'hold the button down' for a second.
I have not had a chance to go through the troubleshooting yet, I just wanted to update. I did buy the Badlands module. Either way I'll be changing it.
