Default Jumping tachometer needle

95 flhtc fairing factory tach has been jumping for most of the year, pretty much dead now at zero alot. Thought possible charging issue but battery is always charged, voltmeter shows 11 at idle and 13.5 at cruising rpms. No issue with lights or radio etc, pretty much ruled out stator imo. Maybe ground issue? Where would i dig for the tach ground? is there terminals on those old gauges or plugs? Overall fairing ground at neck looks ok, where should i start? If bad gauge i assume its replaceable, there are screws either side of needle like it might drop out of cluster but who knows if you could find one haha.

If it's a 2 1/2" factory tach, Then there's an adjustable potentiometer on the circuit board inside the tach that starts to go bad and intermittently lose's connection and then eventually will totally lose connection. It's not repairable because you can't open the housing of the Tach. I have drilled a hole in the back of the housing and with a Number 6 machine screw was able to get the pot to make connection for a little while but only to lose it again. A new tach will be necessary... I'm on my third tach....

Kinda what a figured haven't found any new ones for it, a couple in Europe but nothing here. Will probably have to hunt the salvages.

Yea they're getting hard to find. That's one of the reasons i went with a Dakota Digital speedometer. It has tach, volts and a lot of other ****. Nice changeable back ground color selection as well.

The OP's bike is an Electraglide. The tachometer, speedometer, turn indicators, fuel guage and idiot lights are all one piece.

They come up on Ebay often.

Check for AC voltage at the battery, should have next to none,
a bad regulator would be the cause, and may be why the tach is jumping.
