Default Primary Swap......

I have a complete primary off of my 98 Fatboy with trans and starter.... Will It mount to a 77 Superglide without mods, or many mods...? Don't like the speed of the older Style starters and not real fond of the primary oiling system......

Dunno about the fit, but you can do away with the primary oiling system on the shovelhead. Replace the oil seal on the main shaft with a double lip or the later kind that keeps oil better separated from the crank case, seal up the feed and suction line and put 2 quarts of oil in the primary. It used to be done that way back in the day. Biggest potential problem is oil seeping past the seal on the main shaft.

So if I was to do it that way there would be the possibility that my oil tank level could rise? What grade oil?

The transmission case would need to be modified to eliminate interference with the swingarm.

If it were me, I would just eliminate the primary oiling system and live with the four speed transmission/old starter system.

A quick google search will yield several posts detailing how to do this.

If all the seals are good and the newer type, which I believe are double lipped, you should not have oil problems. That is, the engine oil should stay in the engine and the primary oil should stay in the primary, like on an Evo.

As for what oil, well, like on an Evo, use what you want. I use synthetic ATF.

Not definitely going to do it. Naturally I'd like to do the most feasible.. Don't mind the 4 speed and the starter could always be upgraded... I think it would be the smart approach. Can't wait till spring.... I just wanna ride.....

Ya know, there's nothing really wrong with the dry primary if you have a good oil filter and check the lifter screen at each (frequent) oil change. Yeah, I converted the one I had, 31 years ago, but if I had another one (NO, NO, NO, I DON'T WANT ANOTHER SHOVELHEAD) I would leave it dry.

The principle thing with the dry-sump shovel primary is keeping it airtight. If there is an air leak, such as a poor seal on one of the gaskets, then oil will accumulate and the plates can get wet (been there and done that!). I can't see any benefit of wrestling with a later primary. Converting to a wet clutch is a simple alternative, as suggested above. The primary originally used engine oil....
