Instead of unplugging the headlight why don't you just undo the factory crossover wiring so that your ignition switch works the way it's supposed to. Off/start/lights /accessories. It saves the hassle of unplugging the headlight but also gives you the option of running the engine without all the lights so the battery can get recharged quickly.

Some of the newer Evo's don't have 4 positions. Just Accessory, ignition and off.

I did just that on my '94 Softail. Now I have separate "day" and "night" modes for running without or with lights, the way God and Harley intended. Thankfully, '94 was the penultimate year for the 4 position ignition switch on the Softail.
When I converted the Sportster to EFI, I needed every miliamp I could get. I took the bridge wire off the headlight switch. There's a LED headlight on it now, but I left the wire off. So there are 3 positions: Off, run and headlight. Dr.L would just ride without the headlight during the day. No problem for years, then riding through Bumfuq, Arkansas, population 500 with me in front, then her, then our friends on a twinkie, we all get pulled over by the PoPo for no headlight. After all the BS, I turned the switch on to headlight, the thug with a gun made sure that the high and low beams worked and let us go without the usual armed robbery. Our friend's OL told her "You outlaw."
There's always one poopoo out there..... I'm sure its a law every state.... Not sure what the poopoo here on long island would do. Different breed of cops....
