Default Early Evo shock info please

Hello!!

I'm looking for info on this shock assembly if anyone can help please.

I built a custom bike using H-D Softail parts and want to stiffen the rear.

I wouldn't mind raising it 1" as well.

Due to space limitations I can't shorten my overall center to center length.

I already shortened the removable end as much as possible.

Below is a pic from the net of what looks like the exact setup as mine.

I saw an online vid of compressing the shaft to release a snap ring.

1: Does this type disassemble like that??

The one online didn't disassemble, just installed a lowering kit.

2: What function does the canister perform?

I saw one online with the canister/hose eliminated and the hole plugged.

4: Can the canister be eliminated?

4: How does the adjustment work??

5: What inside is threaded?

Due to space I have to remove them to adjust and would like figure it out.

I think I know turning the cover makes adjustments but how.

I can't find an exploded view anywhere.

Any input is greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks
Randy

What year frame are you using?
Pre '86 is a problem.

If I were you I'd just get some NOS from e-bay w/out the air.
It'll cost you about $100.

Appreciate the reply, I don't know the year but am assuming an early one.

The dealer who sold me the section kept the neck with the VIN for obvious reasons.

I didn't need the neck as I grafted the mid-rear section to my bike.

I don't even know if these older ones are even adjustable, hard to get info.

Thanks
Randy

What year is your bike??
You can get adjustable shocks for softails.

You can disassemble them, HD had a performance spring upgrade kit they sold for that style. That reservoir style is for the first of the softails, 84 to at least 87 (I don't know exactly the last year without looking it up). If you take off the reservoir, I don't think they will work, (you won't have a decent charge) but I've never has a set like that apart. I would just get new aftermarket shocks if you can find them. The issue is that you need ones that will work with the early softails. I just sold an old set of progressives last year that would have been perfect for you. The only way to raise the bike is the shorten the shock. That style you have is not adjustable.

Those are 84-88 softail shocks...no company makes a full size replacement for them.

If you use 89-up shocks they will hit the transmission mount, and have been known to break the shock mounting bolts.

You can use small body softail shocks...only 2 company's make them.
Ultima makes some cheap ones that are adjustable...the ride is barely OK solo...they suck 2-up.

Works makes some great ones...but plan on selling a kidney to buy some.

Appreciate the reply's.

No sense trying to adjust then if they are non adjustable!!

I'm assuming there is a coil spring inside?

Could I disassemble them and put a thin spacer under the spring??

Is the reservoir for a gas charge??

Thanks
Randy

While your bike is an Evo it is worth calling in the Softail section, to see if those chaps have any useful info. Your shocks operate the other way around to other styles, in other words they stretch, they don't squash, so their internal construction will be different to conventional shocks. Hopefully the Softail chaps will have a good handle on your queries.

Appreciate your reply.

Gave me a little chuckle as I originally posted in the Softail section and was advised to try the EVO guys!!

Been trying to find an exploded view or youtube but info is scarce.

At least I now know they are early parts and non adjustable.

Thanks
Randy
