Hylomar will seal those threads no problem, we use it to seal threads on jet engine bearing compartments...
I hope that is the case (unintentional pun)... I used liquid teflon thread sealer, not hylomar, it seems to work good on all the oil drain plugs.

When I get home today, I'll see if there is any significant leakage.

Well, I got home from work, and it hadn't dripped onto the lift yet. But there was a bit more seepage than I was comfortable with seeing. So I drained the oil from the transmission (needed to do that anyway), pulled out the fastener, and cleaned up inside the hole/threads as much as I could. I put a small pin punch into the hole to see how far it would go, and it went in far enough to convince me that the threads went all the way into the case.

So I took the Hylomar suggestion, cleaned all the liquid teflon sealant off the fastener, gooped it up with a thick coat of it, and put it back in. Torqued it to 15 lb/ft and I'll let the Hylomar set up for a day or two before I put any oil in. If it seeps oil, I'll just have to live with it until I need to pull apart the transmission.

About all I can do right now.

I'm hoping it does too. If I'd have known the thread went all the way into the case, I might have put the drill a bit further, thus getting the helicoil in a bit deeper. I thing I've got a good 1/4" of helicoil into the case. It holds torque great. just can't get it to stop seeping oil. Going to be riding season soon, and I've still got a few more things to do on the bike before then....

Congrats on the 5K!!!!

I considered just gooping some RTV into the hole and seeing what happens. I think that is what the 'mechanic' did after he realized he'd stripped the threads. I can deal with a bit of a seep. I can't deal with a steady drip.

RVT should work to. The Gasket maker sealer will also act like Loctite and you wont have to tighten dn too much.

With rtv, make sure you get it as clean and dry as you can, or it won't work at all

I used Hylomar. Got everything as clean and dry as I could, gooped up the fastener, screwed it in, torqued it down, and now I'm waiting a couple days for it to 'set' (although hylomar doesn't totally harden). I'll fill the transmission with oil tomorrow and see how much seeps out in 24 hours.

Seepage or not, the Thunderheader is going on the bike the following day.
