Default Speedometer / Tachometer combo

Damn this thing. I typed a bunch of stuff and it disappeared. I am looking at Biker's Choice cable driven speedometer / tachometer combo 48-2925.

Cable driven electronic controlled black faced speedo with digital odometer and 2 trip meters

Comes pre-wired with a push button switch to select trip 1, trip 2 or odometer and is programmable for use with any ratio speedo drive

Installation instructions and an adapter nut for use with either 5/8" or 16mm speedo cable nut

4-1/4" in diameter and a 4-3/4" top ring

Tach goes up to 8,000 RPM

Fits most 47-95 Fat Bob style dashes

I found it for $139

Is the quality decent? Will the tach quick working in fairly short order killing the engine in the process and leaving me stranded?

Here is the link to the listing on eBay from OEM Cycles another link to Phat Performance.

Just bought it on eBay. Price is low enough to give it a try.

A broken tach shouldn't kill the bike?

Some types can. I have heard of it happening, but somewhat rare. It had something to do with the coil. It has been a while since I have heard of that though.

It arrived in the mail today. I opened the box tonight. It looks ten times better than I expected. The hook up looks fairly simple. The speedometer cable screws on like normal. There is a ground wire, a power wire, then a wire than goes to the negative of coil for the tachometer trigger. The only thing I don't like which is not a big deal I suppose is there is no way to set the odometer to the same as the original odometer reading. The units from Dakota Digital for example do have that capability. On the other hand, the Dakota Digital is a lot more expensive.

There is a simple program procedure for setup / calibration to go through.

It's made in Taiwan whereas the Dakota Digital is made in the USA.

What sold me on this was the OEM look and feel. I also like symmetry and this unit achieves that whereas most others don't.

Besides not being able to set the odometer, I have discovered that there is no provision for the self canceling turn signals. I can get that functionality by buying a badlands or similar module I guess, but I already have a badlands modules due to my LED's. Additionally that would put them on a timer instead working on distance.

So, those two things are a little disappointing and I didn't anticipate.

Here is the back of the OEM speedometer. The white wire with the green stripe is what cancels the turn signals.

I went ahead with the installation anyway but had to stop when one of the rubber grommets on the original speedometer tore while I was removing it.

I didn't zip tie the wires yet but even so, I still managed to find a good way to hide them.

The inside of the dash is still a mess obviously.

You need to reroute that wire that you put through the hole in the frame.
That hole is to access the back left rocker box bolt which you won't be able to do with that wire there.

I knew that. I don't know why I did it anyway lol.

I'll fix it tomorrow since I couldn't finish the job anyway due to needing new rubber isolators for the pins that hold the speedometer in place. I wish the new one would have came with some.

The more I think about the loss of turn signal canceling the more it bugs me. I'll end up getting something to restore that functionality later. It's just a small thing, but I don't like crap not working.

Yeah that would bug the hell out of me too.
If I were you I'd but the old one back in and add a tach somewhere else.

I did one on the Heritage but I had to make my own mounting bracket because I didn't like the one that came with the tac.
