Thought I had my super tuned rather nice, but it was on the factory plugs the bike came with in 85. I put new plugs in and I've twice now had to lower the idle and retune the mixture. Thinking maybe I have a issue, as plugs now look lean. Bike doesn't start as nice, has to roll a few times before it fires ( did fix my no starter issue on previous thread). Right plug is rear jug, which also has a little black around head gasket. Just brainstorming.
Tried to buy chrome tank bib, couldn't find one for a 85 fxsb, tried the 77-84 fxs/sb bib from drag, big no go. If someone needs it, cost of shipping it's yours. If someone can point me to a chrome one that fits that would be great.
Yup definitely lean. If the only thing you did was change the plugs then the heat range of the new plugs is probably too hot because the speckling on the rear plug is most likely from over heating. Stop riding it until you fix the problem. You may want to check for intake leaks also. If the seals are originals from '85 it's a good bet they need changing. Please let us know the outcome.
Intake seals are new as I pulled the butterfly carb setup off and put new Super e stuff on. Doesn't mean this thing didn't rattle them loose though lol. In this picture plugs had maybe ten miles, put another 45 on and they look the same just more black on the base.
I think you need more miles on those plugs to determine if too lean. Any pinging or spark knock? I am not seeing any gross signs of lean/overheating. Just no color except at base ring. 10 miles won't tell much. YD

What jets are in the Super E? Is your air mixture screw set right? Whenever I see plugs like that I think too lean, too hot or both. Especially that speckled one and the fact that it came from the rear jug.
I'm not seeing any specks. I am seeing the early formation of a timing indicator ring on that right plug. But again I don't see any specks on the porcelain. Take a look at the diagram/link below. Lots of good info on reading a spark plug.

Have to agree, right plug is showing a little too much advance and don't forget to much timing is like changing the AFR. I would check that and go from there...
You want the timing band to be in or just below the bend in the ground strap....
