If you want better acceleration I'd go with a different cam and/or carb.

^This^ & a bump in compression unless this has already been done. Tell us more about your bike, OP.

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. We can help you a lot more if you tell us more! What year and model of bike do you have and what, if any, mods have already been done? Do you ride mostly solo or does Mrs B like to ride along too?

Hi guys, should have mentioned this before: 1988 FLHS, rebuild from a rolling wreck. Engine rebuild at 40K ( during the bike rebuild, 45K on the clock now) SE heads on new stock bore HD cylinders and pistons, crank rebuilt, Jims roller rockers, Rivera push rods, Jims big axle lifters, SE 54 cam, Mikuni 40mm carb and manifold, Crane single fire adjustable ignition rev limit 6250, AEM dry filter on 90 degree mount, RB racing Black Hole Exhaust, M6 primary chain tension-er with new primary chain and updated clutch basket and plates, stock trans, Carlini engine / trans torque mount, Race tech front fork internals, EBC floating rotors with PM 6 piston brake calipers, RK Excell aluminum rims on Ness billet aluminum hubs with Buchannens polished stainless spokes, lots more custom work.
Had the bike for 25+ years now, runs great, rides great just would like a better acceleration and since I think it's quite overgeared ( stock everything in the drive train and final drive ) I though about lowering the engine sprocket 1 or 2 teeth If I can find the right sprocket.

That's quite some spec! 1990 FLHS here, owned from new, several other FLHS owners in here too. Baker make 21, 22 and 23T comps, to replace your 25. You'll need a shorter chain as well, I suspect, but I'm sure they can advise and supply. I have a DD6 with modified gearing and they are good chaps to deal with. Baker are an HDF sponsor and you can find their contact details over in the Tech Trans section.

1988 models already have a 3.37-1 final drive ratio. 1994 & up is 3.15-1 so your bike is geared low now. You might want to try another cam with more bottom end like a Wood W-6.

That's quite the list.... Thought we were dealing with a stocker or something, Anyways....

Whats the static compression and how much lift can the heads handle? You might be better suited for the woods W8 cam..... hits hard at 3k all the way to 6500....

Oh yea, a S$S E will out perform that Mik......

Thanks for the input guys, appreciate the suggestions. I feel the gearing is so tall that I can't use 5th gear on most back road cruising. I'll keep my Mikuni, I've trie other carbs and nothing, imo, is as smooth all through the power band as the Mikuni. Compression is estimated at 9.25/1 BTW, I worked at an HD dealership for a couple years and that's how I was able to build the bike. Gonna look into the fewer tooth engine sprocket.
