Why did you join a Harley forum without owning one???

To learn more about them before buying one.

I did the same thing. I joined in 2012, but didn't buy until 2014...I think. I'm terrible with dates. Couple of years anyway.

Did it help or hurt your decision to buy a Harley?
I only ask 'cause it took you 9 years to buy one.

Just to be clear I'm not giving you **** I'm just curious.

Neither. I wanted one back then, as I wanted one last year as I wanted one 20 years ago. It just that 9 years back a friend of mine lent me his Aprillia Falco (1000 CC twin, Ducati SS style) and fell for the brute force of that thing. Until I realized I still turned my head when I saw a Harley drive by.

20 years back I didn't come close, 9 years back I barely had the money for one, times changed for the better so here I am:

And the first thing it does is drop a cylinder .

The possibility exists that your only problem is the base gasket.
If that is the case I recommend getting either Cometic or James metal head and base gaskets.

Most EVO's are partial to a 20 thou base and 30 thou head gasket combo.

Welcome from Hampton Roads Virginia. Do a leak down and listen where it is leaking. Drop it in low gear and crank it around to TDC with rear wheel. Leak down calibrated gages do not work with that much pressure. Least the ones I have.

I would sort of want to just make sure some trash was under valve seat. If it is the valve, I still on tear down would at minimum hit the cylinders with a medium stones for a crosshatch and put new rings in it.

With only two cylinders, you could actually do it by hand. Here in the USA, a hone is a free loaner tools from Autozone.

*update*

Both piston compression rings are broken. Never seen it before and no idea how it is caused. I know I over revved the engine ones or twice because I came from a high performance v-twin, one that could go over 10k rpm. Dunno if it has anything to do with it...

But what a breeze to work on. Everything is accessible very easy. No more 4 valves per cylinder, with double cam shafts in the cylinder head like the Rotax engine. Just a couple of nuts and bolts and the whole top end comes apart. I like it.

Did a quick check on the camshaft bearing and I haven't found any debris. I want to pull the front cylinder as well and will remove the camshaft after that. But thing look pretty good, given the circumstances

One question... The base gasket was een steel plated one, while I expected a paper one. Did they have plated gaskets in'96? Or is it a new gasket which would mean someone has been working on the engine before?

Pretty awesome, eh?

I think there were still using paper gaskets in '96, so it sounds like your motor is not a virgin.

Did your cylinder bore get torn up? Any pieces of piston ring break off?
