Default cam timing

got a 97 fxstc. put a ev 13 cam in a few weeks ago and when I checked the timing it was 5 degs retarded than it was before. does that mean the cam timing is off that much? like the cam gear was off a little bit?

Probably Not... Cam timing is probably correct... it is Not uncommon to have to retime ignition with a cam change!!! Or... yer marks were off that bit??

I run the EV13 in my ‘97... My timing is set 2-3 degrees advanced over the stock setup.

one reason I think the cam timing is off is because it does not sound right at idle and the power does not come on till about 3000 rpm.

Easy enough to change a few degrees at a time until you dial her in.

There are only three ways the cam timing can be off:

1) If the cam gear is not indexed correctly to the cam.
2) If the pinion gear is not indexed correctly to the pinion shaft.
3) If the timing marks on the cam gear and pinion gear are not aligned.

No. 1 is possible depending on how the gear was installed. No. 2 is unlikely (but not impossible) since it is a keyed fit. No. 3 is easy enough to verify.

Quick and dirty test: Pull the plugs, rotate the motor to TDC and shoot some compressed air into the front cylinder. The valves should be closed
