So... working on my wish list for my 86 FLHTC. what are a good replacement speaker for the stock that will require little or no modifications? the stock speakers work but i need something that can handle a little more volume...lol. i am considering replacing the radio as well. the previous owner put some off brand radio in there that isnt even bolted down...lol
I put DS18 EXL-SQ4.0 4 in my 88 FLHTC. You'll need a amp to make them sound good. The headunit doesn't have enough power to push them. They were under $50. Really happy with them.
They handle more power than the JBL GTO427's I have now, per the specs anyway. The problem is that you need a good bit of power to be able to hear anything over the pipes and wind noise at speed. And you need an amp. I have an Alpine 445 behind the fairing.
They are powered by a Soundstream PN4.520. With the head unit, amp, speakers and wiring I have around $300 in it. It's nothing special but I can hear it at 70 mph going down the HWY!
Those DS18's do look like a good speaker. I thought about them but I ordered the Kickers I linked to above only because the max RMS power rating was higher. Probably no difference. These audio manufacturers are very loose with the numbers. 20 Watts from one is the same as 150 watts from another, or more.

Im sure the Kickers will sound great. Not a lot of options s in 4" speakers.
What amp are you running? Let us know what you think when you get them installed.
at this point, i haven't even opened up the faring to look and see if the guy before me put one in or if possibly there is a factory one there. the radio itself is some cheap wal mart special that isnt even bolted to the bike. it just sort of floats in the hole. not a huge deal in and of itself but definately not the way i want it to stay. may posibly look for some marine grade radio so i can remove the " Lid" for easier access.
