If it's strong, you probably have a big enough leak to see it. Need to peer in there under tank and line carefully with a led light in the dark. Could be the needle is leaking a little. Be sure to turn fuel off.
it only takes a few drops to smell.

Well since it seems to go away after a little bit it might not be a leak. That vapor line looks like it has a check valve? Does it vent in? So the tank doesnt pull a Vacuum? I would think if it went in that the tank could over pressure from heat.
Mikuni's vent fuel to the atmosphere out that little black hose, usually just dangles. When you shut off a hot engine, the fuel in the float bowl will expand due to radiant heat of the engine and just vent on the ground. Shutting off the petcock will help.

I would think if it went in that the tank could overpressure from heat. That is why I figured needle valve was leaking a little. Seen many that ran OK since engine could keep up with a little leak. Only when you turned it off did it cause a problem unless you had a vacuum check in petcock or an on/off
The tank cap has a vent in. Pressure vents out thru that front hose on top of the tank in front thru a one way check out that vapor line. CA models take that hose to a charcoal canister. You are correct that that V-Twin when very hot puts a lot of heat to the bottom of the tank. Unlike a modern car, you will catch a whiff of gas fumes in a small garage. On my double car, hower in my experience, it does not smell up a garage. I have had a broken banjo bolt on a gas filter that dripped a few drops and it would smell up my garage. If you have looked good, you are probably OK, especially with a carb. That carb probably has an external vent on top of the fuel bowl that goes into a hose that hangs down under carb.

I check my hose coming off of the top right side of tank. Its cracked in several spots. Im going to replace tonight. So there should be a check valve on the end. Im guessing its to let air out?
Mine has the check in the end I think. You can see it just above left shock in the line. If your line has cracks, ever time you have a full tank and brake, gas is coming out of those cracks and falling on top of the motor. You have a bomb with a slow fuse.
