I was told the new Harley belt simply has a spray to prevent it squeaking till it dust in. Harley always says new pulleys with belt. For sure, rear since the hard chrome is only so thick and once it's gone, aluminum goes like a #2 Pedagree eraser in the first grade. That 5/8 confuses me. The set for 10lbs Gage push is less then 1/2 that for a new belt.
Just when I think I've accumulated enough tools to qualify as having a well stocked garage, aces&8s comes along and throws down a microscope!
Dayum!
That's the bottom of a whiskey bottle he is looking thru, hell he might be still on the floor taking pictures of dirt and sayin it's forensic science. Men lie!

My Indy mechanic thought the pulleys were good and he set the belt. I always heard about a 1/2 inch play is good. I dont have a gauge for exacting 10 lbs pressure so Im guessing on that. Belt seems pretty tight to me.

Did he check the chrome with a scribe on the rear. A simple Gage is about $20 on eBay or Amazon. My understanding is that much play will break or snap teeth from a belt if you are frisky. However, I have no idea how hard you are pushing it for 5/8. My Softail which is set loaded (laying over seat) has about a 5/16 play at Gage depth. After that, it can be pushed more but by then, you are trying to stretch belt cords and I doubt I could push it that much.

I just used my door open lb gauge. At 10 lbs I have 3/8 inch. After I break in the belt more Ill adjust it again.
