Bought a 1998 Road Glide EFI last week- Took it out on a cruise yesterday and I really want to get rid of the backfires. Has aftermarket exhaust as well as a K&N air filter- so my mind immediately goes to a fuel tuner.
Recommendations on a tuner? Could it be something else?
Decel Pops- I had Cobra pipes and backfires very similar on a different bike and a fuel tuner made it stop.
No doubt. At the same time, we see a steady diet around here of guys buying used bikes and discovering that the PO has tuned the carb super-rich, which upon investigation turns out to be the guy was trying to tune his way around an intake leak.
I don't know much about FI in general, but what I do know is that tuners are scarce for the early MM systems like yours. AFAIK, you can still get a Power Commander, and that may be it. It is common to have guys replace those systems with a carb.
Engine temperature sensor in the front head has failed, lean condition that doesn't throw a code. The tuner is always a good thing on a EPA Harley engine but the sensor is a heart of the MM system, prone to fail and can go excessively lean when the ETS is out of range, if you don't have a fast idle then my internet diagnoses is in stone.
If my internet diagnoses is wrong on the ETS, you put more fuel in the 0 throttle position cells to kill the decel pop with a Power Commander, with the Cobra you will just need to richen the low rpm area
Installed the new FI2000R and new spark plugs on Friday and backfire is 98% gone.
At this point it seems to be higher gears 4-5 and low RPMs when decelerating. Looks like I will just have to play with the tuner a bit to fix that area. Might just give Cobra a call.
You mentioned it has aftermarket mufflers. Before I would have done anything at all I would have suspected an exhaust leak. Maybe the previous owner didn't know what he was doing. Next check would be intake leaks. Next check would be any outstanding fault codes. Then I would check the adjustment on the throttle position sensor. (google for the video). Only after making all of these checks/adjustments and it STILL pops, would I have added an aftermarket fuel management system.
I have replaced the head temp sensor on my bike 3 times. I've always known when its gone because it runs horrible (and throws code 14). I wouldn't blame the popping on that sensor but I wouldn't rule it out, either esp. since the guy who mentioned it a few posts above me has already forgotten more about working on EVO's than I'll ever know
