Default Evo newbies

Im new to Harley’s and at the advise of some great old timers I ride with, I went with an Evo. Coming from metric bikes, I’m used to reving it up and running in the high 4000s all day on the highway. At 80mph on my ‘95 FLTCU, I’m at 3600. Would you guys be comfy running that all day? Seems high to this newbie. We have a bunch of 80 mph highway around here in Idaho and I’d like to keep up with traffic and the guys I ride with that have much newer bikes. I’m looking into changing out the rear sprocket to a 65 from the stock 70, but this really only sees a theoretical 7% drop in rpm. That will get me about 3350 or so @ 80mph. Worth it? Also considering a 6th gear. To quote one of the old timers, “Treat that bike like a sore di*k.... don’t fu*k with it!” Love to hear the more experienced thoughts.

Your final drive ratio if not stock, is a compromise of many other considerations that may have been done to the bike.

You were well advised to find a good Evo.
You were also well advised not to F**K with it. You took the first advise, and don't appear to be having any regrets...take the second as well, and just enjoy the ride.
Fact is..you ain't gonna be running 80 mph "all Day". When you do want to run that hard, your bike will be just fine.
The people I have known who had to be constantly tweaking and fixing something on their Evo have been the ones who just couldn't leave well enough alone in the first place.

I have stock gearing on mine and can do 90 MPH all day long out through Nebraska and the like.
I would not worry about it.
There are a couple options for the engine sprocket tooth.
Count the teeth next time you have the primary off.
If I remember right there are a couple options for rear sprockets also.
BUT, I would not get all jumpy about it, like was already said.

If the primary gearing been changed to 24-37, which was stock for 84-93, and 99-01 fuel inj. big twin, that would be 3600@80mph

That’s pretty awesome!! I’ll bookmark that and keep it around for a little while. I think I’ll take the good advise not to screw with things. It’s good to hear that I can rev it up high and run it long.

If that is what ya wanna do... What in the Wide World of Sports possessed you to get an Old Harley?????
Just Curious... I think you should be researching Cost per Mile at your end.
I don't care tho... the more clapped out older bikes there are... the more the Nice ones become worth....

Assuming your bike is completely stock it hits the rev limiter at 5200 rpms.
You can run that bike at 3600 all day and you won't hurt anything.
Hell you could run it at 5k all day long if you wanted to without hurting it.

Mostly because I absolutely fell in love with this bike. Not any TourGlide, but this one. When I say rev it up, I’m only talking about 4K. I like to baby my bikes and keep ‘em forever.

What's your logic on this?
