Not that it matters at this point but I had the same issue with my 98 RKC. I called HD and they have an upgrade kit that switches you from the crappy EVO speedometer to a twin cam version. It comes with all the wires and instructions to do the job. Took me nearly a day but it was easy work.

Local Harley shop here in Sweden told me that retrofit kit no longer exists.

Also I have speed readings in km/h, and odometer readings in km so I’ll have to get one of them.

I will eventually also open the old speedometer and see if it’s possible to exchange the LCD display in some way.

There have been others that have exchanged the LCD. I remember one guy took one out of a used Sporster speedo and worked very well..

Sorry no pics. I'll have to look in my journal and see if I have the part number for the upgrade kit. At the time I did this, there were a few out there in dealerships across the US. One of the speedometers had 0 miles on it. The guy at that place wanted the full $500 for it and was not taking any offers. I got one with around 18k on it for half. Heck, I can do math. Just have to take off my shoes.

Update:

Found a second hand pristine low milage speedometer from a Road King ’03 at a good price.

Just bought the Sub wire harness from Drag Specialties (2120-0295).

Them wires and contacts set me back quite a hefty sum.

I’ll make the exchange as soon as the parts arrive.

Thanks all for the information!

I'm a little late with this but here is the information on the speedometer upgrade kit I bought from HD. This kit is everything you'll need except the connector pin/socket crimping tool to go from the crappy EVO speedometer to a twin cam speedometer. The p/n is 67033-95D. List price is $500 but I got mine for $260 from a dealer who had one on the shelf. I know there are a few out there still sitting. The dealers will be glad to sell you one since they don't fool with EVO's anymore. The kit works fine for my 98 RKC. I figure it should work for a few other EVOs.
