I have a 1991 fxlr. I know altering it isn't a good idea as far as sale value goes. You may be familiar with the unorthofox one piece handlebars/riser thing. Has the leather strip down the middle of the tank, etc.....
How involved would it get to put a tank with a dash on it, and a set of handlebars and risrr and clamp on it? A paint job would prolly be nessessary too, ugh....
I'm not a bike mechanic, but I can handle tools and have UAW journeyman cardholder abilities, lmfao. Whadda you guys think I'd have wrapt up, AND am I correct in wrecking my resale value?

 

it's a 1991, what resale value? When bikes are in our age group, mine is a '93, unless they are some kind of high dollar limited production model or were owned by somebody famous, whatever money you decide to dump into it is pretty much for your enjoyment. If you put say 5 grand into it the estimated value might increase by a thousand. All the things you want to do are not that difficult to accomplish. Pics of what you're working with would help. Buy a manual and good luck with your project.

 

First...as Hey Man pointed out, you have a 28 yr old bike. You didn't mention mileage, and it likely doesn't matter, unless you're sitting on a REAL LOW mile cherry. Otherwise...any changes you make are strictly for your enjoyment, as it should be. It's your bike...ENJOY. Keep the original parts and you can always switch it back, or just include them in any future sale deal.
My bike is a 1985 FXRS. I didn't like the "Sportster-style" gauge setup and put a "Quick-Bob" tank and cat-eye dash on her 30 yrs ago and never looked back. 4 inch straight risers and kept the buckhorn handlebars. LOVE IT.
Granted, there are some people who consider FXR's to be "Premium" bikes and pay above market for an old motorcycle but to realize that premium...you gotta find them when you're ready to sell. I know someone who recently found the best return on her FXR was exporting it to Italy.

Ya, I don’t like those pull back bars. Bought a chopper with them on and the riding position sucked for me. Always felt like I was back too far. A nice set of two into one pipes would look sweet on there too.

 

I hate the looks of 2 into 1 pipes. I know they perform, but Harley is more of a looker than a performer. It's subjective.

 

Bike looks good as it is, if your intent is to put it up for sale. It's an FXR, and they generally garner a bit more. 9,000 miles and it's barely broke in. Let the next owner do the work....
