Oil level should be checked only when engine is at normal operating temperature. The engine will require a longer warm up period in colder weather. The motorcycle should be ridden to ensure oil is hot and is at normal operating pressure. When the above conditions are met, turn the engine off.
Softails should be upright and level when checking oil.
For Softtails only add oil to bottom of dipstick plug.
I did the oil change with the bike on a T-chock, so it was level at the time. I put in around 2.5 quarts, give or take a bit.
As an aside, I have two oil filter wrenches but they're both for a car or truck so they were a bit too big to grab the Harley filter. I had to run to a local dealer to buy the little filter end cap wrench, which worked perfectly.
I put the filter in hand-tight only, of course, about half filled with new oil and the rubber ring fully lubed.
After the bike has been ridden, with the bike standing straight up check the level hot
It should not be higher than the bottom of the fill neck.
Then after it's cooled, standing straight up, check it again.
A 1/2" to and inch is low is best to avoid oil blowing out the air cleaner..
