The bike has 46k on it. Not sure about the motor. Hes at $4500. Most are going for more than that here. There are a couple of local shops here, think I will run it by the man thats been working on them for 55 years and get his 2 cents on it.
My FLTCU is an 89 and it doesn't leak anywhere that should make me worry. I do need a rocker box gasket kit, and I will tackle that come winter. If this one runs well and the price is right, ride it like you stole it!

Looked at it again. Case is stamped - *BLLK 010930*
Yes, the cases are 1989, but as long as the title matches the VIN on the frame, that's the important part. And you can see rear cylinder has the base gasket leak. This is common and can be fixed. Look for the cracked described in other comments. For 1989, ask about the fluid levels in oil and primary. You can't really check a loose case insert unless you tear the engine apart. Bottomline if frame and engine numbers don't match, $4,500 is too much. I, personally would offer $3K, and would walk if no deal.

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate all the information. The local guy thats been doing this for 55 years said thats one of the best years in his opinion, 1989 for EVO. Anyway, he said get it, keep fluids changed and ride the s**t out of it if you like it. Anything mechanical will need work eventually. Id probably be reading my 1999 FLHTCUI that Im not real fond of for it. But that might not be smart either ... lol.
I did did talk to the other guy that owned it for a year before current owner. He said it had been built when he bought it. And thats all he knows.
If it's been "rebuilt," are there receipts for it? And what exactly was done? Your old timer friend is probably referring to '89 having the 5 piece crank that engine builders like, but that's just preference. It has been documented that 89-92 cases have issues. Will you have one? Maybe or maybe not. He's right, everything is going to need fixing eventually. :-) Ultimately your decision, good luck.
We don't have any issues getting parts. I think "a lot of techs" don't know their *** from a hole in the ground. Anyway, besides the numbers not matching, I see nothing wrong with it.
Besides, I'll bet that "a lot of techs" don't want to be bothered with ordering something if they don't have it in stock.
Yeah most techs dont know how to even work on a carb. Parts changers mostly is what they are.
Found a 1994 thats all original with 19k on it for 5k. A 1998 Softail Standard that has 8300 miles for 5k. I looked at both the 98 is tight, clean, no leaks. Has had head gaskets replaced. Hes owned it since 2000.
Still looking. At this point I may keep the Ultra, learn to do cam tensioners myself and ride it more. Only thing is MM / FI.
