Default starter problem

My HD dealer tells me I cannot install a direct starter button on my '84 fxrs. It's early '84 (chain drive) so they say it has an earlier starter+solenoid. There must be an aftermkt somewhere that will work for me; if so how do I install? If not, would HD booster pack work and where should I make connections to starter? Intermittent starting problems are driving me crazy and costing a fortune, battery, starter, solenoid, relay replacements none solved the problem. Please help!!!

Uh oh Rick, you have violated rule #8....... never throw a bunch of parts at a problem hoping something will stick. Do you have a Factory Service Manual? It can help you run diagnostic tests to isolate the problem.

Your dealer is only half right. The Oh **** buttons are made for only '90 and up (I think that's right), however I am aware of some earlier EVOs that had buttons modified so that they would work.

Good luck, and welcome to EVOland.

A friend of mine accomplished the same thing as the button with a piece of thick feeler gauge,
He mounted it on top of his solenoid so that when he pushed down on the rubber cover the feeler gauge made the contact between the battery post and the starting post.

He stopped using it when I added a relay and ran full battery power to his solenoid whenever he hit the start button.

The above was on an '85 super glide.

I mounted one of these under the seat behind the rear cylinder so I could get to it with my hand.(seat does not have to come off) I have the ford type starter relay so I ran cables from the starter button to the big copper terminals on the relay. I had several relays go bad on the bike so I rigged this up. I should add, the bike is an 85 flhtc.

I carry a couple pieces of insulated copper wire in my saddle bag for times when my '94 misbehaves, I jump the terminals and it fires right up. I need to run the line direct to the solenoid, maybe this winter.

First, your starter system is different than any Evo after '88. Second, we need to know exactly what it's doing - click only, bendix won't engaged with starter ring, drags and grunts when engaged or what?

^^^ Seen it many... Many Times... I still do not see the need for such complexity and adding a source for even More Problems!!!
If I was afraid I needed such a set-up... I would certainly use a Washer or a Quarter, on the Solenoid..Course.. if one refuses to maintain a good Battery... even that will fail...so the one small complexity I do Not mind [tho rarely incorporate in my Bike] is a Ground Cut-off!!! Very Simple... very Cheap... and don't Fail!!

BTW; Replace that Fugly Ford relay, with the old tractor starter Bagga shows, and really have safe and Easy...
