Default Another Cam Thread

lol ok folks, just trying to see what might work better so don;t freak out hahahaha..
stock Ultima 120 with a real G carb the cam in it now actually isn;t that bad... 640 lift and 264 duration i think....

it has long legs and pull hard but seams (to me) to lag a bit on the bottom end. i'm wondering if a bit shorter duration might be better for a street bike. take into consideration its a 98 E-Glide so about 780lbs and i'm a big guy at 400+
i was looking at these cams.
Woods 9 and 9B
Crane H304
Mackie DM635
Red Shift 656
i know a few of these would need some more compression.. currently at about 9.8 or 10:1

any others i don;t know about? i'd like to stick in the 625-650 lift area and keep the average duration no more than 264 i like the looks of the 9B most because of the 630 lift and 258 duration.. seams like that would be an ideal cam for a bit more torque...

thanks in advance... Mike

The woods 9b and 9f will be dogs with the stock 120ci ultima compression. I think the 120 are set at 9:5 to 1. You will need 11 to 11.5 for the woods. As well the s&s 640. If your 120 is stock it's a 630 lift with higherift rocker arms putting you at 640. I bet if you set the compression 10.8. -11 that ultima cam will shine.

Current compression is the Key here. You need to know exactly what you have to come up with a logical replacement.. Not gonna guess anything... That's how **** happens....

http://www.ultimaproducts.com/120engine127.html

The 640 cam specs are with a higher ratio rocker arm and a Ultima cam, the Ultima cam is violent with a compression bump in these engines. From experience 10.8-1 isn't very friendly in one of these, hard starts, kick backs, excessive heat but boy will they run and hit a rev limiter quickly. The actual S&S 640 is softer than a Ultima cam but for street manors is a good one, it is another one that a compression bump brings to life.

Your actual question's answer is smaller duration and a earlier intake valve closing would work since the 120" is @ 9.8-1. Scott at Hillside spoke of a Wood cam and quicker rocker ratio isn't a good combination, his words was "you won't like the results". Can only suggest spending some time a Big Boyz calculator getting your desired numbers compared to your current actual numbers.

On the other side if you just do a compression bump the Ultima cam in the 120" will do all you want but involves a tear down and maybe not your goal. If it's not your then your down to the calculator coming up with a smaller cam to keep the air in it a little longer but will also sacrifice some top end.

Note: I'm running the S&S 640 @ 10.2-1 in a max bore 127" using the quicker ratio rocker arms with no problems, great street manors, has been a dependable engine once the compression was pulled back.

i run a V&H Pro Pipe 2-1... not my fave but it's what i have.. all baffle material and plug has been removed..
whatever cam i decide on next year it'll have to be pump gas friendly at no more than 10-10.5:1 compression.. we have 93 octane around here

If it's the older Pro Pipe you have a good one, it will work on a stock big cube with what you have done to it but don't know if can handle the extra power your thinking about but like them.

it's about 7 years old.. i had a D&D Fat Cat and loved it but it got damaged, had to get this and at the time it was all but half the price..
my ultimate goal at some point it to get rid of the beehive springs and replace the stock lifters and pushrods..
