Default Front wheel fitment

I have a 97 heritage and want to put a 21 inch front wheel on it , can I use a wheel from a 2000 and up heritage? What is the difference in the wheels?

They both have 3/4 axles but the rotor center on the 2000 up is 2.2" so you'll have to get a 2000 up brake rotor. As for the 21" you might have to raise the fender. I have a19" under my FL without a problem. 3/4" clearance.

Not too much later then 2000, around 04 ish they changed the axle diameter. Would be easier to find a 1997 wheel then the brake rotor is a non-issue, then you would only have to deal with axle spacers. And even then I would bet the spacers from a Softail Custom of the same year would work. Overall, staying with the same year makes these kinds of swaps a little bit easier. but still custom so things need to be thought through. I believe the wheel should fit under the fender, seen it done before, but no first hand experience. Good luck.

Actually, According to Ronnie's online that axle was used from 1986-2006 on the Heritage and 1990-2006 on the Fatboy.. aligning with proper spacers shouldn't be an issue..

The biggest difference IMO is the use of sealed bearings in the 2000-2006 wheels.
There is no way I'd put a wheel with sealed bearings on my bike.
As for the height both the 16's and the 21's are the same height with tires mounted on them.

So I guess I am better off finding a rim before the year 2000? Any suggestions? Pictures?

Man there are many laced or mag 21" wheels that will fit your bike.
You have to decide what you want.

As for me I'd go with a mag because you can fix a flat on the side of the road with a plug whereas a laced wheel takes a lot more work to get you rolling again.

Nothing wrong with sealed bearings.. It's all a preference like motor oil.. I've switched to 2000 up rims 4-5 years ago and no issues...

The Bay is your friend:

Score it on the cheap, clean it up or maybe re-lace with some stainless steel spokes. I like to powder coat the hub and rim black with stainless spokes, but that is me. Nothing better out there then a wheel from the MoCo.

You could easily just clean and polish that wheel, new bearings and seals for piece of mind, mount a tire, wheel spacers and be on your way . Good luck.
