Default Evo Build Pinging

Good Morning Gentlemen,

Breaking in the build an all is going well. As I put the miles on and change the oil, I am getting more aggressive with the rpm's as I like to break in engines a bit different than the manual states. Always had good luck with rings setting in nicely this way.

Anyway, as I am now doing a bit more runs with quick acceleration, I noticed some pinging. Having an Ultima single fire ignition, I don't have experience with this one.

I have 10.5:1 CR/wiseco pistons/Heads done and Intake flowed/wood 8 hi lift cam - Running good gas and even use a boost/stabilizer. Haven't had the bike tuned as I need to break it in fully before I trust a dyno.

Trying to set the ignition properly and have the voes hooked up - any ideas on plate position/curves/retard/advanced settings?

thanks guys!

I have No idea why one would need a dyno for tuning an Non EI system... but... anyway... Needs the VOES addressed!!!!

dyno mainly to see where this one clocks in at, which will inevitably mean a tune. Of course you can tune a carb without a dyno.

as for the voes, would you mind elaborating a bit more? Voes has a positive status per the ignition, so not sure if that is the primary issue. Definitely could be wrong, however I think this is a timing/curve issue with the ultima which is an ignition I am not familiar with.

thanks for the reply man!

Cool

Your bike will benefit just fine after a dyno tune, I can assure you.

Read the instructions that came with your Ultima ignition and switch it to the next curve down and try again.

therein lies the problem my man, no instructions - came with the basket. Guess slight trial and error may be the way to go. With a high comp engine and aftermarket ignition, would you recommend ditching the voes?

You should be running 6" of vacuum on curve 2 or 3.

10.5-1 with a 47 intake timing shouldn't be a problem with a Ultima ignition but your leaving out some vital's. Is it a heavy or light bike? carb and jetting currently? what timing curve is it on now?
Problem detonation areas with a compression engine is around 45 mph throttle roll on, heavier the bike affects it, timing affects it, lean AFR's affect it. The Ultima should be on the edge on the #2 curve with proper jetting, #3 shouldn't have any detonation and this is without a voes, personally would start knowing if the engine is lean before pulling timing which is power lost, you can mask detonation by retarding timing but Harley's run best right on the edge of detonation.

Post what carb you have plus jets/needles and let some of these guys refer to what works, if your lean isn't very safe with a engine running some compression, heat is power but not be your friend when it crosses to the other side known as sticking a piston.
