Default How to Diagnose bad flasher module.

Dealing with this 91 FXR over the holidays it now has to pass a brake, light inspection test by the DMV and a VIN verification by the CHP. The latter is good, I already know the VIN's are good and match and are not stolen, salvaged or whatever.

Bought the bike, had no tail lights whatsoever. It did have the front signals which would work when you push the button but they would stay on until you hit the signal button again and then they'd turn off.
A friend wired up a set of tail lights that integrate with the license plate https://www.cyclevisions.com/product...e-plate-frame#
The problem is, they won't flash. My friend thinks the flasher module is bad. Is there a test for this? It's located behind the rear fender which means we have to pull the fender. Is there another solution? A new HD flasher is $175.00 and I'm trying to stay away from spending more money.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you

My guess that the LEDs on that license plate frame setup aren't drawing enough juice to wake up the flasher module.

Your options from here would be to either wire in some resistors to up the draw on the lights, or go to a new-style module (eg, Badlands, etc) that will flash with LEDs.

The LEDS are working and the brake light function on the plate works but the flashers won't work..... Badlands is a much cheaper route to go, thank you, I'll give that a try first.
EDIT: Neither the original 91 front lights flash nor the new LED rears. That's what got me stuck... I figured at least the fronts would flash.

Happy New Year

No it won't cause it's not enough load.. not even the front.. you will need a load equalizer.

The front signals and the rear signals are on the same circuit, what ever they do, they do it together.

Throw a set of OEM type bullet signals (that use regular bulbs) on the bike and get past the DMV...

I did Not think the signals "latched" on the '91... is there already an aftermarket module??

`91 was the first year to use the turn signal module, no longer was it necessary to hold the button in to keep the flashers working.

My '90 FXR had the "they will flash as long as you're holding down the button" setup. There was no module (at least not in the later sense of them), just an old-style automotive blinker thing (little metal can) stuffed into the headlight.

From the factory, my '90 ElectraGlide had a proper module. It was ziptied to the top of the right fork, down inside the batwing. It had timer-based self-canceling, so you didn't have to hold down the buttons, and they would turn off after ten or 15 seconds or so. Even even had a speedometer integration so they would stay on forever if you weren't moving.

I replaced the stock module on the ElectraGlide with a Badlands unit when I converted to LED bulbs. The stock unit would not flash with the LEDs. The Badlands works fine, but it does not have the speedometer integration, which I kind of miss.
