The bike is a 99 Evo motor in an 85 frame. I bought it new in 85. Swapped motors 13 years back. S&S super E been on it 20 yrs .
I dont know how to describe whats happening except to say Im running down the interstate, steady 75 mph or so, and the bike kind of bucks one time and continues rolling along. It will do it a few times in the first 30-40mi. Feels like what it does when its running out of gas. Sometimes I hear a sort of backfire pop, but only once and it keeps on going. It
seems like it only happens in the first part of a run. Then no problem. I dont even know where to start looking.
Appreciate any suggestions.
thanks.
Although a 20 year old Super E probably could use a rebuild- i kind of had the same symptoms when i started to lose spark . The backfire pop could be raw fuel coming out a dead cyl. Plug wires- battery cable connections- and the cables themselves could use a check- easy stuff first...

A quick look at the cam sensor wouldn't hurt either.
Thanks for the suggestions. It's a start. This is the worst kind of problem...Intermittent.
On my run South Sunday...In the first 30-40 mi. I got that "lurch" several times, a couple of backfire-like "pops", then nothing for the rest of the ride. Got to Lauderdale..parked the bike, had lunch with a gorgeous So. Florida hottie...( GRIN), then got back on the road for the 120 mi ride home. NO ISSUES whatsoever. "Ran with traffic" on I-95 ( which down here means 85mph) and never had the issue occur.
I'll get into the wires, connections, cables, etc. Look at the plugs, Maybe drop the bowl on the carb to see if there's anything obvious in there...
Thanks again.
Whenever something bucks early on then clears up usually points towards electrics. Different beast but I had the same bucking on my Limited last year, turned out to be a plug with less then 5,000 miles on it.
I had similar problems with my '90 bike and put up with it for a long while, lost to understand what it might be. Then one morning on the busiest UK highway, at peak rush-hour, the bike stopped while in the outside lane, with nowhere to go! After about ten minutes the Police put a rolling block on the traffic, brought everything to a standstill and guided me to safety - quite exciting really!
Which is a long-winded way of agreeing with texas, check your ignition pick-up. Mine was a yucky mess and pretty obviously in a v bad way.
Taking some of the advice I got here( thanks folks)... I undertook the easy stuff first. Pulled the coil. Cleaned all the connection points. Inspected and tested the plug wires, also cleaned the inside of the boots at both ends.
Last.. replaced the plugs. Took her out for a short 50 mi hop, and had NO issues whatsoever. Only time will tell. Thats the problem with intermittent problems. For the moment... Im good to go.
Thanks again.
