Got new clutch cable for '98 Ultra since I figured it was original and cable adjustment was as far out as it would go, literally.

Installed and cable adjustment still needs to be almost at max to get full lever pull.Throwout ok, ball and ramp correct, clutch adjustment 5/8 turn out.

Open to suggestions. Ken

Are you sure you're doing your clutch adjustment correct at the hub.

Turn in until it just starts to get tension then back it out. Try going less or more. Maybe half a turn or 3/4

Check your clutch pushrod

Maybe need to rotate top ball and ramp cap clockwise to next ball socket? Don't know if it'll turn that far? Think coupling arm is sitting at maybe 5 o'clock or so.

What am I kooking for on the pushrod? That's a lotta extra slack to take up. Yes, that's how I adjust the clutch. Did 5/8 turn counterclockwise after meeting resistance.Full slack on lever.

Just looked again. Pushrod and all mating surfaces fine.

Sometimes you can get a false adjustment when the clutch pushrod isn't seated. Look for extensive wear on the ends and to make sure it's not bent. It's a good practice to repeat the clutch basket adjustment two times to make sure it's seated. Once you do it the first time work the lever and then re-do it

Appreciate it, misfit. Got it fixed, don't know how. Pulled clutch and derby covers. Slid out throwout & rod. Went to other side, took off clutch nut, unthreaded rod by hand, pulled pushrod. Assembled everything back, had slight clutch lever with fully slack cable. Pumped it a few times after another adjustment, and only needed 1/4 cable adjustment. Suddenly pull is easier and smoother. Gonna remember that one....best it's been since I got it last March. Bet my creep in neutral is gone, too.

Sounds normal to me.
Every clutch cable I've adjusted tends to use up most of the adjustment.
You have to remember that full throw of a lever takes quite a bit of cable.
I know the book says to back off 1/2 to 3/4 turn but I prefer 1/4 turn. JMO

The highlighted part makes me nervous.
You should have absolutely no clutch lever with the cable fully slack.
I hope it works for you long term.
