So I am in the process of de-oldmanifying the old man bike I just bought! I am only 39 and refuse to admit that I like riding a recliner as opposed to a rigid, so I am making a few styling changes.
I have one of these on the way, Low Profile Tourpack, as well as a Lapera Silhouette 2-up seat and 5" smoke windshield. Now for the question...
I ordered some aerosol touchup paint (for the paint code Silver 33731) and I am going to paint the new tour pack to match. Here is the issue...the king tour pack has a two tone (black and silver, which isn't an issue) but it also has two different colors (and widths) of pin striping. I can paint no problem, but I don't have the hand to pin stripe (or pin stripe tape). Are there any paint and bod guys on this forum that can offer some help? Who to call, where to go? Is this something a regular paint shop can do?
Well, I really like the 90th anniversary paint job. Maybe i'll give it a shot, but Id have to find the proper colors. Its a red and an orange, but they are different widths...I wonder if there is an HD pinstriping source...
Silver is extremely hard to spray plus a rattle can will be challenging, both those colors are clear coated in your picture. If you want my opinion on the striping it's going to be cheaper to have it done, House of Kolor or One Shot is the go too's on striping paint, the Red on it looks about the same color as I just striped my bike in White Bike thread here but you will need to buy: Red paint, Orange paint, White paint to create the orange color or tint the red, striping brush, 3M striping tape and lay out the lines will be $125 in material. Your not going to find automotive striping tape with 2 different colors or match the orange, not trying to be negative but informative.
Omaha used Spraymax 2k clear coat rattle can on his project and came out good, he learned alot and it's best to clear coat that Silver or the whole part after both colors are applied. You will be applying tape lines to paint the 2 tone anyway meaning your not to far from tape lining the pintripes, just takes patience. I'll walk you thru the striping process if you want to try it yourself, you will have to create the orange color my mixing paint and can be done. The guys you see doing it freehand are aliens, most stripes are run with striping tape and paint applied with a sword brush, designs are freehand.

I appreciate the feedback. I don't claim to be anything but a lucky hack when it comes to paint, but I have done a few HVLP in an improvised paint booth jobs as well as a few rattle can jobs with pretty good success. Never Silver though, so hopefully its not too far different from some of the colors ive done in the past. Like my old man told me...its all in the prep.
I was able to find the color matched aerosol from paintscratch.com and luckily enough I was able to find the pinstriping tapes in what I think is the right colors. Ultimately you are likely correct in that it will be most cost effective to have an expert do it, but with the tapes...I figure its worth the $120 to attempt it. Then I plan to clear over everything.
Worst case, its only paint and time, and Ive wasted more of both doing less productive stuff! I should have everything next weekend so hopefully I can get this ball rolling and post some pics.
Thats one thing I still don't know about. Can I clear over vinyl pinstripes or should I pinstripe over the clear?

Put your 2 colors on as normal if the silver isn't a base coat, If it's a base coat will need cleared within the hour or sooner. Scuff the dried colors with red scotch scuff pad, you can wet sand it paying attention to knocking down the tape but silver can't take much grit or it will change colors. Clean the heck out of it and put your tape pinstripe on it, clean it again, clear over everything. Pinstripes look much cleaner when cleared over, I've sprayed Urethane over taped pinstripes with no problems, just don't load the first coat up or it can lift the taping and move it around.
