Ahhh, you mean solenoid...

If everyone used their own nickname for parts we would never know what people are talking about.

If you are trying to start the engine, quit messing around with jumper cables and buy a battery.

84 FXWG still had the old hitachi shovel style starter, slow turning over is a sign the brushes & armature in the starter are about burnt out, common on one that old.

Yeah, sorry about the abbreviation.

The jumpers were just to see if the engine would spin. Plus I was able to learn a little.

Battery and a few more parts are on the way.

Question about ignitions.

I have an old single fire ignition and it was acting up before I put the bike away, it would run normal and then suddenly only fire one cylinder for long periods. I replaced the coil and it still happened. Is it common for the ignition to go bad? Asking because I'm thinking about just ordering up a new ignition kit, either a Dynatek or an S&S is what I was thinking.

One would think so, and be correct for that year but......

That starter motor is clearly the Prestolite version, looking at the splines and the 1/4" thru bolts.

I know they used the prestloltes on the FXR's, sounds like a parts box special he's dealing with.

Would explain the dragging maybe.
