Default Rear exhaust mount bracket

Guys, need your help to refresh my memory. Putting stock headers back on the 89 FLHTC, and I forget the orientation of this mount. Looking from the right side of bike, how does this bracket get mounted using the starter bolt again? I forget if the rounded end goes toward front of bike or rear.

I'm just going from memory and mostly guessing, but I think the ball end goes forward.

Worst that happens is you get it wrong and find out the hard way when you go to install the pipe and the bracket doesn't line up. Then flip it over and you're set.

You have a 50:50 chance of getting it right! Or is that wrong? I forget. Offer things up and go from there. We'll be lookin' over ya shoulder!

I have the same issue putting on my boots every morning. Once I get one on the correct foot, not too hard to figure out where the other one goes...

Well guys, I did get a 2003 stock header onto the 89 FLHTC with Screaming Chicken mufflers. BTW, it was the straight leaning edge that faced front of bike.

Here's a picture of my '93 FLHTCU. I removed the forward bolt so you can see the bracket.

Exactly which SE mufflers did you use Daven?

And in the words of Dan89 - "without a pic, it didn't happen"

Well that really has spoiled all our fun! Now we'll never know if Daven got it right first time....

Thanks to you guys and I did dig up some photos of my bike in 2008 when I did the base gasket. Back then, I took photos of everything so that I would put it all back together without having extra hardware laying around. LOL... Taking lots of photos is a good habit to get into for any project, especially if it might sit for awhile.

So, I picked up this whole exhaust set for next to nothing a long time ago. Being a 2003, I didn't have to mess with O2 sensors and such. I was running Propipes so I had to replace the bracket at the transmission trap door with original bracket. The only thing I did not use was the 2003 clamp for the rear exhaust header. I used my OEM one off the 89 FLHTC. ~1998 and later bikes used a different type clamp and the rear exhaust mounting bracket (wishbone looking thing) is slightly different too. I could have easily bought the new bracket, but wanted to see if everything would work without added hardware, and it did.

Here' the whole thing mounted:

Here's the OEM rear exhaust bracket and OEM header clamp.

Screaming Chicken pipes. I don't recall the specific number on the muffler, but I did take it down and look them up when I initially bought them years ago. It doesn't have Screaming Eagle stamped on the outside, but I know these aren't stock. They are loud enough, but I was going for a quieter sound than my old and tired Propipes.

So if anyone is looking to put on some later OEM exhaust, it can be done easily. Lots of good reasonable take-offs for sale.

Thinking about that, it makes sense now. That rounded end is there for good ground contact.

:: duh ::

Nice looking scooter you got there!
