Default Motor Oil Level Question

I have a '95 Dyna FXDS. I use 20W-50 dino oil. If I keep the motor oil level near the full mark on the dip stick, I get some blow-by running out the air cleaner. I'll also find oil at the base of the rear cylinder tappet block. If I keep the (warm engine) oil level near the 'Full Cold' mark on the dipstick, I don't get any leaks or blow-by. Where do you keep your oil level?

Every engine is different, if it's happy at that level keep it there.

I used to fill my oil "the way you are supposed to" when I did oil changes, then one time my bike decided it didn't like that anymore. Now I just let her do whatever the hell she wants, and everyone is happy.

Oil level has no effect on blow-by or tappet block leaks unless you run it bone dry...then it stops leaking...

Oil coming out the air breather is not necessarily blow-by, and can be caused by being overfilled...run whatever level the motor likes...

An EVO motor is still basically 1930's technology...it is not the space shuttle

Fill to the cold mark on the dipstick when the engine and the oil the oil cold (or maybe about 1/2 inch above the cold level). That is with the bike on the side stand.

You just described the same thing I experienced with my 1994 FXDS. I keep it at the level I just mentioned and it took care of the issue for me. Regarding the oil at the tappet block, is it from the oil dripping out of the air cleaner?

The oil level will rise with heat and will be considerably higher after you run the bike for awhile. YD

I wouldn't dream of even looking at the oil level in a Cold Harley... They all sump just a bit... can't help it... some more than others..
Read the manual...

The Dyna's (FXD's) don't sump. The oil tank is lower than the pump. To quote others "run what the motor likes". That is what my motor likes.YD

Fair enough..
Next time a Dyna come in, I'm gonna pull the hose off the pump "in" and see what happens... I have been "told" both ways.. now I'm gonna investigate... Especially since I have been "told" that the Harley oil pump cannot "siphon" or draw... Obviously I do Not see any new ****!!!!
