I think Dyna S and Ultima 53-50 are the aftermarket version of the Shovel electronic ignitions that came out mid-'70s maybe.

pretty sure it was a circuit breaker because it clicks and then will click again a few seconds later. Battery is charged up and was turning it over right before i switched everything back to points. Hopefully the service manual is at the house when i get home today because the ol lady is about tired of me having a bike in the living room.

There you go.

Wire may be shorted between the points and the coil, most likely near or at the points. Or, the points themselves may be shorted. Check your work - don't need a manual for that.....

If it had points when you got it, you should already have them. They may be stuck or worn out. You can buy replacements from any aftermarket outlet. Some are better than others but I have no recent experience so can't make a suggestion.

In my opinion you need to stop messing around with that Dyna S ignition and install a Dyna 2ki ignition.
It's much easier to install and doesn't have any weights or springs to wear out.

If you're using an inductive timing light it can be a pain in the *** and messy.. I also think you should get the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for your bike...
Thanks for sharing 98, I'm following this thread because I'm about to attempt install of my new dyna2000i ignition and get a baseline setting going in order for me to get it to my local tuning guy who will tune my new build it on the dyno.
Cheers 👍
