I have seen several after market windshields that are cheaper but don't have the two extra tabs the stock Harley windshields uses, and they just have the five bolt holes. I know the newer bikes don't have the tabs but they may have stronger, better built fairings.
I would gues the shorter windshield would be ok 6" would not put as much stress on the fairing as say a 13"
Anyone have experiences with these after market windshields, especially in taller sizes? I have the old '90 Ultra, and I know there have been a lot of improvements since that time....
I recently gotone with the two extra tabs for my 89 Ultra from Cee Bailey's http://www.ceebaileys.com/harley/flht8695_ws.html I got the 7" -- it was around $50 delivered. I did have to wait three weeks, but they stated that upfront when I ordered it.
I have a 90 Ultra also and if I remember right I purchased one from JC Whitney years ago. It has worked fine for years. I don't remember the price but I'm sure their more now.
Every single aftermarket windshield I used that did not have the extra 2 tabs like the stock one would constantly loosen after a highway ride and would squeek constantly.
The aftermarket unit I run is the National Cycle 11 3/4 Tall part number 750 465 from the J&P cycle.
It has the 2 extra tabs and costs 82 bucks.
I trimmed it by myself down to 10" and have put 20k on it and it works perfect. Never loosens and resists scratching. Two mods I also added were to replace the worn out factory foam strip on the windshield with a new replacment piece I picked up at home depot and trimmed to fit and to use a little 3M black window trim adhesive around the 5 bolt holes. This has eliminated all squeeks and rattles.
I have 4 inch Cee Baileys its 4 years old and never had any problems with it ! I know they have a high quality product . And I like the fact that it is precurved not just a flat piece lenax , check out there web site!
I got mine from ebay, about 30.00-34.00 shipped I believe. I have a 1989 FLHTC and it has 5 holes, easy install and ebay has a bunch of places that make these for this application. Bought mine over a weekend, had it by midweek install in about 10 minutes. Got the small 6" for mine, never had a problem with it and lots cheaper than HD or places that sell them for more than 35.00 including shipping. Just my thought tho..Good Luck!!!!!!!!! Doc
