Default Bolt Replacement

I have spent a little more time with my low mile evo Softail Standard. The engine needs paint, but a lot of the bolt heads are rusty. I was thinking of replacing them. Can I replace them if I do it one at a time? I'm mostly concerned about the head bolts near the spark plugs.

There are chrome metal covers that use a small allen/hex bolt to lock them on.

This would be a tough one, Evo base gaskets are prone to leak I'd be afraid to try it. Harley makes cover for them or brush some high heat silver on them after a good scrubbing with a detail brush while washing the bike.

Head bolts are not primary cover bolts, I would not attempt that. Two great options offered, good luck

Rustoleum rust dilsolver gel, spray on a small paint/acid brush, let it sit for an hour. Wash off. Works awesome!

Absolutely not, unless you plan on taking the top end apart. To disturb the head bolts will cause a lot more than base gasket leaks. You can replace most all the nuts and bolts on the engine if you're careful, just not the head bolts. (They're actually long nuts on studs)

As mentioned, there are many styles of covers that look good.

Do not replace the bolts just due to rust. You will have problems.

I replaced mine....only because one backed off which created oil leaks and head gasket failure.

Just shop around for some head bolt covers. Plenty of out there.

Definitely not a good idea to touch the head bolts unless your gonna pull the heads.. Do yourself a flavor and get the chrome caps....
