Default Evo ultra classic?

Hello, I'm looking to do some longer trips with my wife who also rides. I'm tossing around the idea of trading my 14 iron 883 in for a 97 ultra classic with about 17k miles. I've taken it for a test ride and they are asking a pretty reasonable price for the shape. I'm just wondering if anyone has any pros or cons or any advice on things I should be sure to check out before I make a decision.

Thanks

Evo's are a great ride, reliable, and easy to work on. I have a 1996 Electra Glide Classic with over 154k miles and still going strong. Take care if it and it will take care of you ... Enjoy

If it has FI vs Carb you'll be somewhat limited as to what you can do as far as engine upgrades. I've had my '94 for16 years with no interest in trading it for anything different. I think once you get used to the weight and maneuvering it, you'll really like it. I'll always have a bagger.

A few words of advice - don't park where you have to try to back it uphill to get out of a parking place, it's much heavier than your 883 and it's a bear to try and push around.

Is that bike fuel injected or carb? I'm thinking probably fuel injected. I would do the deal in a minute but i've already got a FI EVO. You'll have to learn how to work on fuel injection. A couple of the components are getting scarce if they ever need replacement. Also, if you get it, ride it around town for a few months before you go on a long trip. It's getting old and has pretty low mileage. Some of your gaskets may be old and dried out. You don't want to find a big leak on a trip. My EVO sat in a garage for 10 years before I bought it and it only had 2,500 miles on it. The rocker box gaskets were spraying oil out in pretty short order.

Post up pics if you buy it.

IMO the 97 and 98's were some of the best bikes the Motor Company produced. My 97 has about 70k and I had a 98 that I traded that had 80k. Give us as much info about the bike as you can and we can help you with what to look for and what may need attention.

Agree with everything said. A little bit of love, a little bit of upgrades to make them run the way factory should have made them run but couldn't, and you have a very reliable, easy to work on, more than capable machine. YD

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately the dealer sold the bike out from under me today so it's gone :/. I've found a 94 heritage with about 19k miles that I'm going to check out tomorrow. Its got custom green candy paint and some screaming eagle upgrades.

Coming from a small sporty this sounds like a fun bike.
