Default pickup voltage

I have a 1993 FLHTCU. I recently had to replace the pickup sensor in the cone. The old one was melting. I did a voltage check coming into the pickup sensor and I had 9V. Thinking this was high for a pickup sensor I researched the repair manual and it should be around 5V. Is this a sign that my ignition module may be failing? I have not looked at the wiring diagram yet, but I figured the red, black and green wires came from the module. Would anything else be the culprit? I don't want to shorten the life of my new pickup. Thank you.

It definitely does sound like your ignition module.. It does supply the voltage, 5 volts to the pickup.. Here's a diagram to help you out..

Just to be nosy what kinda meter did you use?
Measuring only 5 v and being correct takes a pretty good meter.

Just past experience has taught me that one.

Good luck WP

Any decent brand digital volt meter will work.

are you checking to ground or to the return wire at the sensor?

I believe I was wrong in my previous post... another way to bypass the sensor and ignition module is to pull a plug and re-connect the plug wire and lay it on the cylinder head, make sure your key is on so you have 12v supply to the coil.. Momentarily ground the other side of the coil. This should produce a spark at the plug.. if it does then either your cps, rotor or ignition module is no good.. I wish I had a 93 manual. 95 up was different because of the Altitude switch they built in to the CPS..
