So the sets I’m seeing for split tanks are one vented one not and the opposite thread deal. Is that correct ? And I need a shut off so a 90 bend or straight down? And was looking for any old school ideas for shut off or ideas. May just go standard but figured u guys would no. Bike is a 1988 heritage .thanks
The caps are as you describe. One vented one not with reverse threads. Nor sure what you asking regarding a "shut off". If you are referring to a petcock (fuel valve), yes you need one if the bike has a carburetor . You can go with a standard type attached to the tank or rig up a fitting where the petcock would normally go and just put a valve inline on the fuel line. I would suggest some type of filter though, either in the tank or the fuel line. One on the fuel line makes it less hassle to service it.
^^^What he said^^^, The petcock shut off is the easiest, filter's in the tank,
being there's no fuel gauge the reserve is nice for getting you to a station when you forget to fill before a long ride.
The Harley petcock I find hard to turn with gloves so I went with a Golan (for the detents)
but Pingel has detents now also. Both are excellent. Just make sure you get the correct hose barb angel.
There's down, right center and left, determined by the handle position and location on the tank.
On your 98, I think it's the left. but look at what you have. https://golanproducts.com/petcocks/
Only the right cap is vented so it doesn't leak when the fuel expands while on the jiffy stand.
The upper crossover hose equalizes the pressure. There's also an upper overflow hose that goes to the ground
behind the starter.
The vented cap is required to permit air to displace the fuel as the engine sucks gas.
I was riding the Shovelhead last year at hwy speeds and the bike started coughing then suddenly died. While troubleshooting, I pulled off a gas cap and there was a pig whoosh as air rushed into the tank. The vented cap had failed and there was a terrible vacuum caused by this. My carb was staved for gas. Problem solved by keeping the cap off til I got home
