Awesome advice everyone! Thanks for the speedy reply. Checked runout, shaft is straight, no damage to the case, I was speaking with one old timer who said the cam bearing was on recall, and when they installed the torington bearing they just left the pieces in there, and not many returned do to shrapnal. I did get a new cam, was waiting to install pinion and assemble and see what happens, I guess the worst is I get out in the middle of nowhere and it goes boom, in which then I know I have to completely rebuild it. Found a pinion gear for $211.97,almost 3 weeks ago, been waiting for it to arrive so I could slap it together and get a few more miles on it. a bit of a conundrum.
I highly recommend you don't slap new parts in and get a few more miles on it. "out in the middle of nowhere and it goes boom" <----done that. Got the T-shirt.
Did you find all the missing teeth that broke from cam & pinion gears, or anything of the cam bearing? Did you cut and inspect your oil filter, tappet screen? These will give you a better indication of what internal damage that was done.
If you are going to slap $400 worth of parts together, at least check your oil pump, lifter, push-rods (if adjustable), flush oil lines, and oil tank. Flush everything where oil can travel, short of splitting your case. When you have done that, you will get another 1K miles out of it. Don't ask me how I know...re-read first line. Again, I'm not recommending option, but it is an option. Good Luck!
