1st time Harley owner 93 FLHTC, Didn't get 5 miles and everything shut down, Cam gear lost 5 teeth, pinion gear lost 3 teeth, and the cam bearing, cage and all came apart. Worm gear and breather are ok, I was told I need a 25045-93 green pinion gear, problem is there are none around. Any recommendations or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from the new guy!

First off cam gears or pinion gears just don't break.. You need to pull the oil pump to inspect for debris. I've never seen the cam gear get wasted.. If your cam bearing went I'm sure it's elsewhere in the case. You will need to split the cases.. Lets get a pic posted of the cam chest and go from there.. I would like to see if there is case damage at the cam bearing..

I'm with 98hotrod. Never saw a cam gear lose teeth. Have seen cracked pinion gears but never teeth missing. Better than even chance the pinion shaft is bent by now and it's not replaceable on flywheels later than '87 unless it's aftermarket. You might want to re-group on this whole operation.

Pinion or cam "colors" only denote the pitch of the teeth and have nothing to do with fitment in the engine other than matching the 2 gears for quiet operation. If both the pinion and cam gears are trashed, get a cam first, measure, then order a pinion to match. But again, I fear you have bigger fish to fry...

Might be cheaper at this point to put a new crate motor in the bike.

Awesome advice everyone! Thanks for the speedy reply. Checked runout, shaft is straight, no damage to the case, I was speaking with one old timer who said the cam bearing was on recall, and when they installed the torington bearing they just left the pieces in there, and not many returned do to shrapnal. I did get a new cam, was waiting to install pinion and assemble and see what happens, I guess the worst is I get out in the middle of nowhere and it goes boom, in which then I know I have to completely rebuild it. Found a pinion gear for $211.97,almost 3 weeks ago, been waiting for it to arrive so I could slap it together and get a few more miles on it. a bit of a conundrum.

That old timer is an idiot.

BS story. There was no recall on cam bearings on the Evo.

And the idea of leaving debris in an engine is a BS story, or the guy is just a hack, not a mechanic.

The old timers are right here, and none of us would think of reassembling an engine without finding every piece of debris from a failure.

Your engine needs to be completely disassembled and inspected, there is no short cut.
