Default Engine Over Heated

All -
On the way home, after work, I'm doing about 70 to 75 mph, tacking about 3k. I begin to lose power and the engine eventually died. Long-story short, the bike started up after about 2 hours of sitting.

My question is, why did it over heat?

It's a 1984 FXRT, Evo engine, stock pistons, Ultima ignition, rejetted CV carb.

Before the over heating issue, the engine was running rich so I installed a hotter plug. (Only 1 step hotter, nothing drastic.)
The ignition is set up for an 80 inch Evo. (No VOES installed)

Is it possible the Ultima ignition is too much for this engine?

What are your thoughts.
Thanks.

Why do you think your engine overheated?

Did you do any troubleshooting while the bike was stopped, such as check for spark?

Did the motor get noisy like you lost oil pressure? Usually when the motor gets really hot the oil will thin out and the lifters and rockers will get noisy.. Like Dan said, Did you check for spark when it died? Most likely a coil or the Ultima ignition..

No trouble shooting was done. I was on the side of the freeway without any tools. I believe it over heated because, no actions were performed other than time passing by.

I didn't hear any significant engine noise.
The coil is new.

Did you open the fuel cap listen for vacuum? Maybe it ran out of fuel from a fuel cap not venting correctly.

I didn't not remove the fuel cap.

The Ultima ignitions preprogramed advance curves with out a voes are pretty aggressive for a stock evo, the Dynatek 2000i ignitions have less aggressive preprogramed advance curves more suited for a stock or mostly stock evo, I'm not saying that is your problem but something to think about

With VOES or not, D2ki or Ultima, at 3K rpms (you're doing more than 3k @ 70+ unless it's been re-geared) the ignition will be at max advance unless you're at WOT.

I'd check the fuel cap and pull the petcock, check the screen.

I'm gonna stick with my guess that it ran out of fuel from tank not venting. It eventually got enough air thru the cap after sitting that long to let the fuel flow to the carb. Or whatever was sticking to the petcock screen finally settled, or both....
