Harley motors have had Nick names for decades. The older Pans were called "Flat Sides" and as time went on when the Shovelhead was introduced.. It still had the flat side cases but eventually a new bottom end was designed with new Wheels which was called The cone motor.. That came around somewhere around 68 I believe 66 or 68.. Anyways just bottom end was very reliable and then they increase the stroke on the shovels and then eventually built the later model Evo motors. Still using the same cone for the cam chest.. in the cone there is a lot of heat that is contained inside the cam chest without any real cooling so if you want to use an ignition system that's totally enhoused in the cone that's your decision.. There is extra heat down there and reliability can be an issue down the road. I really like the Dynatek ignitions, they seem to hold up pretty good but nothing's better than just a cam position sensor down in the nose cone with a remote ignition module.. You will get more life out of that...

Just to qualify my opinion.....

That was my experience many years ago, I am not a mechanic, but I do my own work. I'm just a lowly, lowly, machinist.

Everything is better now but that does not change my opinion on keeping electronics as cool as possible for longevity. I like that module under the side cover under the seat.

They were circling but afraid of getting man rabies due to the tourettes feature I have.
