I have a 95 Dyna Convertible that the PO left out in a shed for at least one North Texas winter. When I rebuilt the CV carb I knew sooner or later I would be dealing with the liner breakdown in the fuel tank.
Well, sooner came and I was not really wanting to use any type of chemical to try and breakdown the remaining liner because I wanted to keep the factory paint intact.
So, pulled the tank, took out the sending unit and plugged everything up.
Poured a half gallon of Simple Green in the tank followed by a half gallon of hot water and two big handfuls of assorted bolts, nuts and drywall screws.
2 hours of shaking in every possible position, 5 minutes on 5 off, I decide to drain it and have a peek .99% of the liner is gone.
I rinsed the heck out of it, fished out all the hardware with a magnet, rinsed again and ran the heat gun on low to dry it out.
I vacuum checked it for leaks and found none.
The plan now is to fill it with Evapo Rust overnight, drain, rinse with water, slosh some Rubbing Alcohol around to help dry things out, rinse with a bit a gas and reassemble.
Sometimes Id rather be lucky than good
after the rubbing alcohol, i would just do one swish through with marvel mystery oil or 2 stroke oil (and drain any extra). Will coat the bare steel and prevent any flash rust until you can re-install and re-fill completely.
