Well when my 60w. Comes in im going to experiment. Probably goin to run half 20/50 and half 60w.
Ill see how it goes. In this heat i cant imagine it hurting anything. Was 95 here yesterday with 75% humidity .
i usually always bump my weights up on all my vehicles in the summer. My supercharged mustang calls for
5w20 I always run 5w40 in the summer and its worked out fine for the last 4 yrs.

You don`t need to blend your own oil concoction, especially for an Evo engine.

20w50 conventional oil is all that engine needs.

Nobody is wearing out Evo engine parts using 20w50 dino oil, any brand.

19976446[/url]]Thanks for the thoughts guys. Bought the [evo] bike recently so the Twin Cam is sitting. I have always used 20w50 Castrol gtx going back to my Shovel head days. Nowdays I use 15w50 Mobil 1 full synthetic. But that real hot day on the evo with miles on it got me thinking 'cuz it's kinda noisy. Now I am wondering if the cushioning would be better with the dino oil but the heat dissipation with comment has got me thinking even more cuz I always overthink everything. I need a hobby. Oh yeh, this is it .....
I’ve been running the Mobil 1 15w/50 in my ‘97 RK. I swapped to this after the first 5k miles, she’s over 100k now.
That said, I’ve always questioned if the 15w base is sufficient. As I understand it the first designation (15w) is the actual weight of the oil, the second designation (50w) is how it functions at operating temperature.
The Mobil 1 15/50 is still about $6.50/qt, when buying it in the 5qt jug, on sale at Wally World!

The oil is tested at two temperatures, and is compared to single grade oil viscosity at the same temp.

15w50=

At cold temps it flows the same as a cold SAE 15.

At hot temp if flows the same as a hot SAE 50.

Within a certain range of course.

Thanks Dan,
I couldn’t remember how the ratings work... makes sense 15w (winter) viscosity when cold, 50 viscosity at operating temp.

Yes, but 25w60 makes me feel better!

Took my recently purchased 93 out for the first time a couple days ago. It was a warm day but I wouldn't consider it super hot. I noticed when I stopped it was showing zero pressure and the idiot light came on. I let it idle like that for a couple minutes and didn't hear anything unusual so started rolling again and pressure went back up to between 20 and 30 and no noise on the 10 mile ride back to the house. The dealer said they did an oil change on it when it came in and I'm assuming they put 20-50 in it. The odometer shows just under 16,000 miles but who knows with a bike that old? I think I'm gonna go ahead and do a oil change and put straight 50 in it and see if it holds pressure when it gets hot. The FSM recommends straight 60 for hot temps though.

I've used one qt. of straight 50w and the rest 20w50. Seems to work jus fine here in the Florida heat.

The FSM does not recommend SAE 60 for hot temps, it simply approves it, (beside that, thicker oil is not a cure for low oil pressure in any engine).

If you are not hearing lifters clattering, the engine has sufficient oil pressure, all the engine needs is about 6 PSI at idle...

Low oil pressure reading on gauge when hot is normal, if the light is coming on, suspect a bad oil sending unit.
